    Where East Africa's wildlife lives

Six places we send travellers most often. Each guide covers what you'll see, the best months to go and how it fits into a longer route.

    • Wildebeest herd crossing a river during the Masai Mara migration

      Kenya

      Masai Mara

Kenya's most celebrated wildlife reserve, the Masai Mara is where the Great Migration reaches its dramatic climax each year.

    • African elephant on the Amboseli savanna with Mount Kilimanjaro behind

      Kenya

      Amboseli

Amboseli is famous for two things above all: its large, well-studied elephant herds, and postcard views of Mount Kilimanjaro rising across the Tanzanian border.

June–October and January–February for clearest Kilimanjaro views and dry-season game viewing.

    • Zebras and wildebeest grazing across the vast Serengeti plains

      Tanzania

      Serengeti

The Serengeti's endless grass plains give the park its name — 'Serengeti' derives from the Maasai word for 'endless plains' — and host the largest terrestrial mammal migration on Earth.

Year-round, with location-specific timing depending on where the migration is.

    • Zebras grazing on the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater

      Tanzania

      Ngorongoro Crater

An extinct volcanic caldera roughly 20km across, the Ngorongoro Crater concentrates an extraordinary density of wildlife within its walls year-round.

Year-round — the enclosed ecosystem means consistent game viewing in any season.

    • Snow-capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro under a clear sky

      Tanzania

      Kilimanjaro

At 5,895 meters, Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa's highest peak and one of the world's tallest free-standing mountains — a striking, snow-capped presence visible across the Kenya-Tanzania border region.

June–October and January–February offer the clearest skies for both trekking and photography.

    • Aerial view of Zanzibar's turquoise beaches and coastline

      Tanzania

      Zanzibar

A popular add-on to a mainland safari, Zanzibar's white-sand beaches and warm Indian Ocean waters offer a natural way to unwind after days of early-morning game drives.
