    Dunes, Pans and Open Skies

Red sand dunes and a lone acacia tree under a wide blue sky in the Namib Desert

Namibia is a country of space: enormous dunes, desert-adapted wildlife and some of the darkest night skies in Africa.

Sossusvlei, in the Namib Desert, is known for towering red dunes, including Dune 45 and Big Daddy, and for Deadvlei, a white clay pan with ancient dead trees. Most visitors climb a dune at sunrise, before the heat.

Etosha National Park is centred on a vast salt pan and floodlit waterholes where elephants, lions, rhinos and giraffes come to drink, especially in the dry season. Damaraland and the Skeleton Coast add desert-adapted elephants and a stark, shipwreck-strewn coastline.

Distances are large and the roads are long and quiet, so itineraries often mix scenic drives with short light-aircraft flights.
