    Big Five and Cape Town

Table Mountain rising above Cape Town under a moody evening sky

South Africa combines classic Big Five safaris with Cape Town, the winelands and a long, scenic coastline.

Kruger National Park is one of Africa's largest game reserves and is home to all of the Big Five. Neighbouring private reserves such as Sabi Sand allow off-road drives and night drives, which the national park does not.

Cape Town sits beneath Table Mountain, with the Cape Peninsula, the penguins at Boulders Beach and the Cape winelands all within day-trip distance. It pairs well with a safari as a city-and-coast finish.

South Africa is also one of the easiest countries for a first safari: good roads, a wide range of lodges, and malaria-free reserves such as Pilanesberg, Madikwe and those in the Eastern Cape.
