    Amboseli: Elephants Beneath Kilimanjaro

Amboseli is small but famous: big elephant herds, open plains and, on a clear morning, Africa's highest mountain filling the horizon. Here is how to get the best views.

Amboseli National Park is one of Kenya's smallest parks and one of its most photographed. The draw is simple: large, well-studied elephant herds walking across open plains with Mount Kilimanjaro rising behind them.

The mountain: how to see it

Kilimanjaro, at 5,895 metres, is on the Tanzanian side of the border, but Amboseli has the classic view. The summit is often clear at sunrise and hidden by cloud later in the morning, so early starts are essential. The clearest skies are usually in the dry months, roughly June to October and January to February.

Tip: ask your guide to head for open ground before dawn, and be patient. The mountain can appear suddenly as the cloud lifts.

    The elephants

Amboseli's elephants have been studied for decades, and many families are known individually to researchers. Swamps fed by underground water from Kilimanjaro keep the park green in the dry season, so elephants, buffalo, zebra and wildebeest gather near the water. Watching a herd with calves cross the plain in morning light is the reason most people come.

Elephants are social and spend much of the day at the swamps.

    Other wildlife and birds

Besides elephants you can expect giraffe, lion, cheetah, hyena and large flocks of birds around the swamps. Observation Hill gives a wide view over the park and a chance to stretch your legs with a ranger.

    How long to stay

Two nights is the minimum for a good chance at both clear mornings and long elephant sightings. Amboseli pairs naturally with Tsavo West: our 5-Day Amboseli & Tsavo safari does exactly that, adding Mzima Springs and the lava landscapes of Tsavo. For a longer trip, our 11-Day Kenya Highlights continues north and west to the Masai Mara.

    When to go

    • June to October and January to February: best for Kilimanjaro views and dry-season game viewing.
    • March to May and November: green and quieter, with more cloud on the mountain.

    Practical notes

Amboseli is dusty in the dry season, so bring a scarf and protect camera gear. Nights can be cool. Our packing list covers the essentials.
