Packing for a safari is easier than it looks. You mostly need light, comfortable layers, good sun protection and a way to see wildlife up close. Use this list as a starting point and check weight limits with us if your trip includes small aircraft.

Open vehicles are dusty and cool at dawn, so layers matter.

    Clothing

    • Lightweight shirts and trousers in khaki, olive or tan. Avoid bright colours and, in some areas, dark blue and black.
    • A warm fleece or jacket for early-morning and evening drives, which can be cold in an open vehicle.
    • A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.
    • Comfortable closed shoes. Boots are only needed if you will be trekking.
    • Swimwear if your camp has a pool.

    Gear

    • Binoculars. Even a basic pair makes a big difference.
    • Camera with a zoom lens, spare batteries and memory cards. See our photography tips.
    • Power bank and adapter. Camps usually have power at set times.
    • Torch or headlamp for walking around camp at night.
    • Soft-sided bag. It fits vehicles better and is usually required on light aircraft, where luggage limits are strict. This matters most on a flying safari.

    Health and documents

    • Passport with at least six months' validity and blank pages, and any visa or eTA required for your destination. Our planning guide explains the basics for Kenya and Tanzania.
    • Travel insurance that covers medical evacuation.
    • Insect repellent, sunscreen, any personal medication and a basic first-aid kit. Check with your doctor about malaria prevention and vaccinations.

    What to leave at home

    • Large hard suitcases.
    • Camouflage clothing, which is restricted in some countries.
    • Plastic bags in countries where they are banned. Ask us for the rules in your destination.

    A tip on tipping

Tipping guides, drivers and camp staff is customary. We send a simple guideline with your pre-departure pack, so you do not have to guess.

Not sure about something on your list? Ask us and we will tell you exactly what to pack for your route and season. Still choosing where to go? Start with our safari packages.
