Victoria Falls: When to Go and What to Do
The water level changes everything at Victoria Falls. Here is how the seasons differ, what to do on each side and how to fit the falls into a safari.

Victoria Falls, or Mosi-oa-Tunya ("the smoke that thunders"), is shared by Zambia and Zimbabwe and is one of the largest waterfalls in the world. The experience changes dramatically with the water level, so timing is the key decision.
The seasons at the falls
- February to May: high water. The Zambezi is at its fullest, the spray is heavy and the view is at its most powerful. You may get wet, and the main viewpoints can be misty.
- June to August: good flow. Water is still high, the weather is cooler and drier, and views clear as the spray reduces.
- September to December: low water. The edge of the falls is more visible and, on the Zambian side, you may be able to swim at the edge of the falls from Livingstone Island when conditions allow.
Zimbabwe side or Zambian side?
Each side has its own character, and many visitors see both.
- Zimbabwe: wide views across the face of the falls from a series of viewpoints in the national park, strongest in higher water.
- Zambia: closer and wilder positions, the Knife-Edge Bridge and the Livingstone Island experience.
Check current entry requirements before you travel, as visa arrangements for crossing between the two countries can change.
Things to do
- Helicopter or microlight flights over the falls.
- White-water rafting on the Zambezi below the falls (seasonal).
- Sunset cruises on the upper river.
- Bridge walks and viewpoints.
- Short wildlife drives or a day trip to Chobe National Park.

Fit it into a safari
Victoria Falls works well at the end of a safari: after the Okavango Delta or Chobe in Botswana, or after a few days in South Africa. Allow at least two nights so you can see the falls in different light and add an activity or two.
