How Much Does an African Safari Cost?

Prices vary widely. This guide explains what drives the cost, what is usually included, how to compare quotes and where you can save without losing quality.

There is no single price for an African safari. Two trips of the same length can differ by several times depending on where you stay, when you travel and how you move between parks. Understanding the main factors will help you compare quotes fairly.

    What drives the price

    • Season: the peak months, including the migration river crossings from about July to October and the Christmas period, cost more. The green season is often cheaper.
    • Accommodation: budget camps, mid-range lodges and luxury camps price very differently, and the most exclusive properties charge a premium for location and service.
    • Transport: road transfers cost less than light-aircraft flights, though flying saves time. See road or flying.
    • Length and route: more nights and more parks add up, as do park and conservancy fees, which are set by the authorities.
    • Group size: private vehicles and guides are shared among everyone in the group, so a couple pays more per person than a family of four.
    • Destination: gorilla permits, Botswana's low-volume camps and the most remote areas carry higher fees.

    What is usually included

Most safari packages include accommodation, meals as stated, park fees, transfers and a guide with a safari vehicle. International flights, visas, travel insurance, tips and personal items are usually extra. Always read the inclusions and exclusions on each trip page, such as on our Wings Over the Mara and 8-Day Kenya Family Safari pages.

    How to compare quotes

    1. Compare the same number of nights, rooms and activities.
    2. Check whether park fees, flights and transfers are included.
    3. Ask about vehicle sharing, guide quality and the maximum number of guests per vehicle.
    4. Look at cancellation terms. Ours are in our booking terms.

    Where you can save

    • Travel in the green season or shoulder months.
    • Choose a mix of camps rather than only the most exclusive.
    • Combine a road safari with one or two flights.
    • Travel as a group of four to share a private vehicle.

    Where not to cut corners

Guide quality, safety standards and responsible operators matter more than a small saving. Ask who your guide will be and how the company supports conservation and local communities.

    See the numbers

Each package on our safaris page lists a per-person starting price and what it covers. Read what past guests say, check our planning guide for other costs such as visas and vaccinations, and ask for a quote tailored to your dates and group.
